While it’s only just the beginning of the festive season, we’re already looking forward to 2018, thanks to a beautiful hue or two which will be gracing next year. Seen all over the catwalks and already emerging in design and homeware, these are the colour trends to watch out for…
A standout trend for 2018 will be a move from pastels to intense colour palettes. While the calm cool tones of pastels have been seen as an antidote to the current geopolitical climate, playful bright tones that evoke a sense of fun, much like the 1980’s will be everywhere next year to make us stop and smile. Key colours Pantone Colour Institute have earmarked include sharp and citrusy Lime Punch and joyful Meadowlark. To spot the next big colour, it needs to start popping up in occasional, influential places before going mainstream, according to Monnington Boddy, colour director of trend forecasting agency WGSN. Some big fashion moments of recent; Rihanna’s gown at the Met Ball 2015, Beyonce’s Lemonade video and Emma Stone’s La La Land dress all point to sorbet shades of yellow being the next big thing.
Red is the colour of the winter 2017 season, but it will transcend right into next year too. The colour of romance is being reclaimed as the colour of rebellion and standing out, again thanks in part to global affairs. The power, and danger crimson evokes is why so many shades and varieties are en-vogue right now. Whether it be vintage looking rusty reds, such as the flavoursome named Chili Oil Pantone featured in its spring 2018 top 12 colour palette, or the even hotter and bolder Cherry Tomato colour. If it’s red, it’s in.
Heading along the colour wheel, we now come to pinks. Millennial pink has been a huge colour news story, with its peaceful aura and gender neutral connotations not just for the youngsters – Maybe it’s the nations love of the Great British Bake Off, but when Le Creuset launched its Oasis collection in early 2016, and KitchenAid’s candy coloured mixers appeared in every kitchen in the country, it was apparent millennial pink was popular with every generation. With peonies the most instagrammed flower and Pantone choosing Blooming Dahlia and Pink Lavender as two colours to call out for 2018 fashion trends, delicate floral tones are definitely here to stay.
To balance out those pretty pastel shades and bright and brash tones, neutrals are here to provide a calming influence. Metallic are a classic and are no longer classed as a dramatic colour choice. It seems gilded gold is the new white marble. Indeed in Pantone’s 2018 colour trend report from New York Fashion Week, it presented four classic colours that are the mainstay of many wardrobes and homes. Core classics such as beautifully named Coconut Milk and comforting Warm Sand are effortless.
Another classic colour palettes is the many variations of blues. Smart, sensible and resourceful navy is back alongside more technology inspired bright turquoises. We’re big fans of Pantone’s Little Boy Blue thanks to its azure shades taking us to far off destinations and Harbor Mist, which is a lot like Britain’s drizzly rain. Reassuring homely, this dove gray tone is perfectly suited for the time we live in – the reliable colour of 2018.
